Burnout is often treated as an individual problem requiring greater resilience,
stress management, or self-care. This presentation reframes burnout as a signal
of the organizational systems and cultures in which people work. Drawing on the
World Health Organization’s definition of burnout (WHO, 2019), research on
psychological safety (Edmondson, 1999), and the U.S. Surgeon General’s
workplace wellbeing framework (2022), it examines how workload, trust,
leadership behavior, belonging, communication, and organizational practices
shape employee wellbeing. Participants will explore the hidden costs of unhealthy
cultures, including disengagement, silence, diminished trust, turnover, and lost
human potential. Grounded in *Leading for FlourishingTM*, the presentation shifts
the focus from individual coping to organizational conditions and leadership
responsibility, emphasizing cultures where people, purpose, wellbeing, and
performance can sustainably thrive together.

The Conference Theme for 2027 - Leading with Intention: Shaping Leadership Across Organizations, Industries, and Communities.
Psychologists who lead, advise leaders, and develop leadership capability bring a distinctive perspective to the practice of leadership. The 2027 SPL Annual Conference will explore how psychological science and professional practice can strengthen leadership wherever it occurs.
Leadership today demands clarity about where to go, judgment about what to carry forward and what to reconsider, and the courage to shape what comes next. Through presentations, dialogue, reflection, and shared learning, the conference will examine how psychologists take on leadership responsibility, advise decision-makers, develop leadership in others, and influence organizations and systems.
Conference programming will take place Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10, with pre-conference programming on Thursday, April 8, and post-conference programming on Sunday, April 11.
